In 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik into space. This was seen as the beginning of the Space race due to the general fear about weaponizing space. Space was seen as the new frontier for weapons and technology and the United States and the Soviet Union jockeyed for supremacy as an expression of their world power.
