The pulmonary artery is also the only artery in the body that carries unoxugenated blood. When the blood goes to the lungs, it picks up oxygen and drops off carbon dioxide to be expelled from the body. The pulmonary vein then takes the oxygen-rich blood and brings it back to the heart.
