[tex] \sqrt{121} = +11 and -11  [/tex]
If you take the square root of something, you are looking for what number, when squared, will give you the number within the square root.
Ex: [tex] \sqrt{9} = 3[/tex]
[tex] 3^{2} = 9 [/tex]

so with [tex] \sqrt{121} [/tex] both [tex] -11^{2} [/tex] and [tex] +11^{2} [/tex] with give you 121
