Martin Luther King Jr., wrote the "letter from Birmingham jail" to let his followers, and fellow protesters wanting the same equality rights as him, know that he was an optimist and would continue to preach and protest for his dreams to end segregation of all African Americans.

I believe he wrote it to explain his religious views, share his opinions regarding segregation, and used the letter to defend his actions.
