They said AB=8 and as you can see 8 is represented by two dashes here and if we take in what i said earlier,, that means DC= 8 too. They also said AD= 5. Since 5 is represented by one dash we can easily see that since BC also has one dash,, it is going to be equal to AD which concluded to the answer of 5.
