apply rule --> a + (-b) = a - b

6/3 + (-1/6) = 6/3 - 1/6

= 6/3 - 1/6

= 2 - 1/6

= 6 x 2 over 6 - 1/6

= 12/6 - 1/6

apply fraction rule --> a/c - b/c = a - b over c

12/6 - 1/6 = 12 - 1 over 6
