Iron oxide reacts with aluminum to give aluminum oxide and iron. what kind of chemical reaction is this?

This is single replacement reaction because a compound reacts with an element and metals switch places.

The chemical equation would look something like this... (keep in mind the subscripts are not there, because we can't find them with the given data)

FeO + Al -> AlO + Fe

In this case it is a SINGLE REPLACEMENT Reaction
This is because the Iron and Aluminum swapped places (were replaced). Only one replacement occurred... so that's where the single part of it comes from.
