When do you use a definite article (le, la, l', les) in French?

Le is used for masculin nouns ex: le ballon
La is used for feminin nouns ex: la bague
L’ is used for nouns that start with a vowel ex: l’astronaute.
Les is used for plural nouns ex : les filles
