The north and south poles of the magnet are simply described as its polarity.

Polarity of Magnet

Every magnet is polarised into the North and South poles.

These poles are simply elements within the magnet that will attract or repel other objects.

Please note that the south pole usually attracts the north pole of the magnet while the south will repel the south pole and vice versa.
