A linear equation is defined because it has only variables with an exponent of 1, for example:

y=5x+3

Is a linear equations because all of the variables don't have any other exponent other than 1.

But in this case, since the equation is:

[tex]y=3x^{2}-2x+5[/tex]

We can see that the first term on the right side has x with an exponent of 2. So this is not a linear equation. Thus, this is a non linear equation.
