what happens if you can't remove a splinter

If you cannot remove a splinter, a couple things happen.
One being the area of skin and tissue fibres start to get infected with the rust, wood bits etc that the splinter consists of.
You will also feel a lot of pain and discomfort. 
Also, the splinter would become more embedded in your skin!
