Throughout the story, the title can be understood as an implication that George is an intruder to Ulrichās land, as he has legally obtained it, and that Ulrich is the intruder on Georgeās land, as the forest belonged to his family first. But at the end, it is clear that title implies that humans are intruders on natures land, for wolves hear Georgeās and Ulrichās cries and not their friends. In the end conflict man verses man becomes conflict man verses nature.
