The Selective Service Act, passed in 1917, allowed the federal government to draft male citizens to serve in the military. Drafting individuals (also known as conscription) resulted in the US military generating the large number of soldiers they needed in order to obtain victory in the war. This law lead to millions of men between the age of 21-30 to serve during World War I.
